Raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Al Raine's introduction to skiing began late in his teenage years. His goal to became an excellent skier and competitor took him to Europe in 1962 at the age of 21 where for three years he honed his skills achieving both his goals before returning to Canada in 1965. He worked at the Red Mountain Ski area, Rossland, British Columbia, for a winter before moving Montreal Quebec where he Coached the Ski Hawks in 1966 and 1967.
