Nomination Information

At the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame, we believe in the importance of celebrating the extraordinary success stories of athletes, builders and coaches. These incredible stories are shared in hopes of inspiring the next generation.

 

STEP 1 – SNOWSPORTS DISCIPLINES

The Canadian Ski Hall of Fame and Museum bases recognition of the snowsport disciplines and categories recognized as disciplines of the following International Snowsport Federations (IF’s):

 

  1. International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS)
  2. International Biathlon Union (IBU)

STEP 3 – CATEGORY DEFINITIONS

COMPETITIVE ATHLETE

An athlete considered for nomination is one that is accomplished in snowsports at a national or international level. The athlete category accommodates nomination of all athletes including those with physical or intellectual challenges, including Paralympic or Special Olympics athletes.

ICONIC (or DISTINGUISHED) SNOWSPORT ATHLETE

An Iconic snowsport athlete will be considered for nomination upon having achieved fame for a unique story that has left an indelible mark and positive impact on the sport.

COACHES, TRAINERS & TECHNICIANS

Coaches (assistant coaches) or any other trainer or technician that has led an athlete to particular success and stands out among the many as a pinnacle for motivation, training and assisting athletes to achieve greatness in snow sports.

BUILDERS

Anyone that has meritoriously enhanced, developed or improved snowsports in a sustained and significant manner. The Builder will be recognized by those in the industry as having maintained effective relationships with organizations and individuals with the goal of continually improving the future of snowsports. An example of a Builder could be (but not limited to) a resort/ski area or product industry leader, snowsport professional (instructor or teacher) an author, filmmaker, photographer or celebrity who has gained fame and had a positive impact through their snowsports exploits. Further ‘Builder’ examples are provided in the sub-categories below.

a.     Snowsport Leader

A snowsport leader (examples could be a senior staff person, program manager or administrator) is an individual that has established and maintained an organizational climate that has continually encouraged the development and retention of athletes or participants. This individual has also provided a measurable and recognized high level of morale among athletes, programs or events and supporting individuals involved.

The individual will have proven ability and a record of organizing, promoting and maintaining effective relationships with supporting organizations and partnerships with the goal of continually improving the future of the sport and organizations involved.

b.    Officials

Any individual charged with the duty to administer rules of snowsports as defined in the snowsport disciplines.

c.     Contributors

A contributor is an individual who, through paid or unpaid service and has achieved long-term impact in the advancement of snowsports either directly through hands-on work in the sport or indirectly such as a sponsor or philanthropist.

d.     Event Organizers

Significant and long-serving leaders of major international events in Canada, who have impacted the sport and contributed to the advancement of snowsports nationally and internationally or left a legacy or continuing presence which continues to benefit athletes and sport development.

e.     Volunteers

Volunteers are individuals who have provided unpaid service and have generally achieved long-term impact in the advancement of snow sports national and internationally.

f.     Athlete Supporters

Athlete Supporters are individuals who have either directly (through “hands-on” work in the sport) or indirectly (such as a sponsor or philanthropist) have significantly impacted the advancement of athletes.

g.    Pioneers/Innovators

Pioneers are individuals who are among the first to develop, use or apply a new method, area of knowledge, or activity pertaining to the improvement of snowsports.

h.    Snowsport Professional or teacher

Snowsport professionals (ski/snowboard school directors or instructors;  or leaders in training and certification) are individuals who stand out and have been widely recognized for their impact and advancement of techniques and teaching that have influenced learning and skill development for snowsports participants in general.

 

STEP 4 – CRITERIA

General Statement

Any individual who has achieved and been recognized for outstanding achievements or has attained prominence in snowsports and whose conduct brings distinction and positive acclamations to the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame, will be considered eligible.

In addition, any individual who has made a major contribution to the development and advancement of snowsports in Canada shall be eligible for induction to the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame.

Other general criteria required for all Categories are as follows:

  • Canadian citizens whose achievements have impacted snowsports Nationally or internationally; or a non-Canadian who has specifically impacted snowsports within Canada.
  • Sustained involvement in the sport.
  • Positive Impact and legacy for Canadian snowsports.

 

Criteria Categories

 

There are 4 descriptive categories for Competitive Athlete Criteria, which will be used in the Voting Process.

1. Record & Level of Achievement

  • Olympic/Paralympic, World Championship, Major International (World Cups or iconic events such as X-Games), National recognitions.
  • Measured success with awards and setting a record(s).
  • Extraordinary success at highest level of competition.

 

2. Competition Level

  • The level of competition where success has been achieved.
  • The highest level will obtain higher points.
  • Success such at the National and International A competitive record may be considered.

 

3. Perseverance, Dedication & Sustained Commitment

  • Consideration for how difficult it was for one athlete to achieve extraordinary success.
  • Was there considerable difficulty from previous years?
  • Was the success achieved for a highly technical or difficult competition?
  • Has the athlete consistently achieved success over time?

 

4. Character must be supported by letters of recommendation and answer the 6 Pillars of Character; Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

  • Has the athlete shown outstanding dedication and inspiration to others? Consider sportsmanship, leadership, community service and impacting others in a positive manner and has the athlete brought positive attention and growth to snowsports?

 

 

There are 4 descriptive categories for the Iconic (or Distinguished) Snowsport Athlete Criteria,  which will be used in the Voting Process.

1.Description of Achievements

  • Is the athlete’s story of particular interest and historical significance at a national or international level?

 

2. Description Achievement Level

  • Awards and Recognition for unique competitions or other accolades.
  • Success as a competitive athlete will positively support this nomination.

 

3. Perseverance & Sustained Commitment

  • Consideration for how difficult it was for them to achieve their sucess.
  • Was the success achieved through highly technical or specific skill?
  • Was their achievement particularly innovative?
  • Has the athlete consistently achieved success over an extended period of time?

 

4. Character must be supported by letters of recommendation and answer the 6 Pillars of Character; Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

  • Has the athlete shown outstanding dedication and inspiration to others? Consider sportsmanship, leadership, community service and impacting others in a positive manner and has the athlete brought positive attention and growth to snowsports?

 

There are 4 descriptive categories for the Coaches, Trainers and Technicians Criteria,  which will be used in the Voting Process. 

1. Record & Level of Achievement

  • Significant contribution to the advancement of the sports of skiing and/or snowboarding.
  • Measured success such as achieving awards and honors.
  • Specific recognized contributions such as improving the opportunities for athletes.
  • Certification by a National governing

 

2. Athlete Performance

  • Recognized achievements for the role in teaching/training and preparing a highly successful athletes for competition.
  • Consistent success in the teaching, training and advancing athletes to the highest level of performance.

 

3. Perseverance, Dedication & Sustained Commitment

  • Level of difficulty and obstacles that were overcome in order to train any particular athlete. For example, was the athlete already a natural or did they require a high level of instruction and/or coaching?
  • Did their commitment have measurable impact on the performance of the athlete(s) and/or snowsports?
  • Did the individual play a large role in the obvious improvement of athletic ability and commitment of a successful athlete?
  • Has the individual displayed long-term commitment to the sports of skiing and/or snowboarding?
  • Has the individual contributed consistently and made an impact on the overall success, awareness and opportunity for athletes to compete?

 

4. Character must be supported by letters of recommendation and answer the 6 Pillars of Character; Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.

  • Leadership, role model, community service and impacting many in a positive manner.
  • Did the individual play a large role in mentoring athletes leading to improved prospects for their success in sport and life in general?

 

There are 3 descriptive categories for Builders, which will be used in the Voting Process.

1. Record & Level of Achievement

  • Individual will have a record of recognized contribution, including awards by other organizations.
  • The contribution must be of significant national importance.

 

2. Perseverance, Dedication & Sustained Commitment

  • How did the Builder contribute above and beyond the call of duty?
  • Were they considered a visionary for their significant impact on the athletes, programs, or events?
  • Has the Builder created, assisted or been instrumental in development of innovative methods and/or through their efforts brought significant (general or specific) improvements to snowsports over the years?
  • Did the builder overcome difficulties?
  • Has the Builder maintained continuous involvement in snowsports?

 

3. Character; (must be supported by letters of recommendation and answer the 6 Pillars of Character; Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship)

  • Leadership, role model, community service and impacting many in a positive manner.
  • Team player qualities and extraordinary peer relationships.

 

Policies

The Canadian Ski Hall of Fame is governed by Policies and Procedures that have been reviewed and accepted by the Board of Directors (February 2021). The Policies are in place for the Selection Committee to provide concise, measurable and transparent guidelines for the Committee who are responsible for the decision of selecting deserving individuals for induction into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame. The Selection Committee is appointed by the Board and follows specific guidelines for eligibility to serve on the Committee. There are detailed guidelines for categories, criteria and voting processes.

 

Voting Policies

Once all of the qualified nominations have been accepted and the deadline has closed, each member of the Selection Committee will review and vote privately. It is a highly confidential process.
