Marie-Claude Asselin reached the pinnacle of freestyle skiing when she captured three world championship titles between 1977 and 1983.

Born in Ville Saint-Laurent, Que., in 1962, Asselin won 35 World Cup competitions during her dominant career, along with Canadian championship titles in each of those seasons. She claimed the three world championship titles between 1981 and 1983.

In 1983, Marie-Claude was named Canadian Athlete of the Year under the age of 20 and was awarded the Elaine Tanner Trophy as Canadian Female Athlete of the Year.

“I started when I was seven. We were living in St-Donat and had neighbours from France who skied a lot,” she said in an interview with Canadian Sport History. “They took me skiing one day and I liked it a lot, so they took me again. My parents had already bought me the equipment. I caught on very fast.”

Many consider Marie-Claude a pioneer in freestyle skiing, helping pave the way for the next generation, including the famed Quebec Air Force. Her dominance in aerials was unmatched—she reached the podium in all 23 World Cup events she entered, winning 17 and placing second in six.

“Since her debut on the competitive skiing stage, Marie-Claude’s achievements, coupled with her drive and enthusiasm, have made her an inspiration to those around her,” read a statement from her Canadian Ski Hall of Fame nomination package, ahead of her induction in 1991.
