Through his appointments and accomplishments, Bill Tindale was considered to have been one of the most forward-looking sports officials of his day. His concept of a national team approach to competitor development was adopted by nearly all sports governing bodies in Canada. His organizational contribution created the modern operating environment for both the ski and Olympic associations; other sports organizations once again following his lead.

In the national context, he was responsible for establishing the first Race Rating System (Laurentian Ski Zone), the formation of the International Competitions Committee of the Canadian Amateur Ski Association and the creation of the National Ski Team (the first for any sport in Canada). During his tenure, Canadian competitors achieved four World and Olympic championships.

Moving on to the Olympic association, his efforts resulted in a reorganization which remains in place. He was largely responsible for the founding of the Olympic Trust of Canada, a body which has raised tens of millions of dollars since its establishment. Other accomplishments were the establishment of the Young Olympians of Canada and Game Plan in 1976. He also organized Olympic ’68, the original planning conference from which the modern Olympic movement evolved.

Over the years, he earned an Award of Merit from the Montreal Sportsman’s Association (1966), the Gala des Skieurs Award from the Canadian Amateur Skiing Association (1966), an Air Canada Award for Canadian Sports Executive of the Year (1967), a Government of Canada Centennial Medal (1967), and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal (1970). He was an Honorary Member of the famous Red Birds Ski Club and an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Olympic Association.
