Mike Douglas
Mike Douglas is a renowned figure in the world of skiing, celebrated for a 36-year professional career defined by leadership, innovation and a deep commitment to the sport. Known for his integrity and pioneering vision, Douglas has consistently given back to skiing since his earliest days as an athlete.
His roots are in freestyle skiing as a moguls competitor. As a member of the National Freestyle Ski Team, he served as athlete representative before transitioning into roles as a national coach and athlete mentor. Over his coaching career, Douglas has guided and influenced numerous world-class skiers, including Olympic gold medallists Tae Satoya, Dale Begg-Smith and Jennifer Heil.
Douglas’s impact on the sport extends well beyond competition and coaching. He and his former coach, Stephen Fearing, were key collaborators with Salomon on the creation of the first high-performance twin-tip ski, the Salomon 1080 in 1998‑a breakthrough that transformed freeskiing and reshaped the ski industry. This innovation earned him the nickname “Godfather of Freeskiing.” As a competitive freeski athlete, he won the K2 Back 9 event in 2006.
His contributions have been recognized throughout the industry. Douglas was named Powder magazine’s Male Skier of the Year and selected as one of the publication’s 48 Greatest Skiers of Our Time.
In a multifaceted career, Douglas has served as co‑owner of Momentum Ski Camps in Whistler, an X Games commentator, and a prominent ski film and television personality. He is credited with more than 40 film appearances and 50 magazine covers. He also created Salomon Freeski TV and, as a producer and director, has earned more than 30 film festival awards, including selections at the Banff and Whistler film festivals.
Douglas’s dedication to the skiing community is further reflected in his advocacy and leadership roles. He is a co-founder of Protect Our Winters (POW) Canada and serves on the boards of POW Canada and the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation, where he focuses on environmental advocacy and community support.
In 2024, Douglas was named director of skiing for the Natural Selection Tour, overseeing the production of a groundbreaking backcountry freeskiing event in Alaska.
