His visionary work—most notably as co-author, with André Schwarz, of the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance (CSIA) foundational concepts of movement and motion—revolutionized how skiing is taught by emphasizing fluid, adaptive human movement on snow.

From 1979 to 2000, Olson authored and edited all CSIA educational materials, shaping generations of instructors through a progressive, student-centred curriculum that remains central to the CSIA’s philosophy today. His technical expertise and pedagogical innovation have inspired countless instructors and skiers, earning him a reputation as a trusted mentor and leader within the ski community.

Olson’s leadership and contributions have been formally recognized through his induction into the CSIA Hall of Fame, honouring a lifetime dedicated to innovation, curriculum development and mentorship. His work established a modern, biomechanically informed and learner-focused approach to ski instruction in Canada.

He also played a significant role in fostering collaboration between national and international ski organizations. Olson represented Canada at numerous Interski Congresses and ISIA events, served as head coach of the Canadian Interski Team, and contributed as a member of the CSIA International Committee.

Beyond his extensive influence within instructor education, Olson served as technical editor for Ski Canada Magazine from 2000 to 2006. Through clear and precise communication, he helped elevate public understanding of ski technique and trends, making advanced concepts accessible to a broad audience of recreational and professional skiers alike.

From 1993 to 2000, Olson served as a judge at the prestigious Mike Wiegele World Powder 8 Championships, reflecting his deep technical knowledge and respected judgment at the elite level of the sport.

Known for a leadership style defined by humility, precision and an unwavering commitment to quality, Olson has mentored generations of instructors.
