John Smart 1989/90. Canadian Freestyle Ski Association.

In a long and distinguished competitive career in freestyle Moguls skiing, John Smart represented Canada as a member of Canadian Freestyle Ski team from 1987 until 1996 and competed at the 1994 XVII Olympic Winter Games, Lillehammer, Norway and the 1992 XVI Games, at Albertville, France.

On the Federation International de Ski (FIS) World Cup Moguls circuit he compiled a superb record, competing on 110 occasions, placing in the top-10 no fewer than 65 times and winning 17 medals — 2 Gold, 5 Silver, 10 Bronze. He was in the Moguls Finals at 4-FIS World Ski Championships (1995 La Clusaz, France, 1993 Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, 1991 Lake Placid, USA, 1989 Oberjoch, Germany). In FIS World Cup overall standings, he finished 2nd in 1993, 4th in 1995 and 3rd in Dual Moguls in 1996.

After retiring from FIS World Cup competition in 1996, he joined the Pro Mogul Tour winning 3 Gold medals, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze and earning the title of World Pro Mogul Champion in 1999.

In 1993, he was invited to join the FIS as Chair of the FIS Freestyle Athlete Representation Committee. In this capacity he was the voice of the World Cup Freestyle athletes and lobbied for and achieved a number of key changes in the sport of Freestyle skiing. His unrelenting pursuit of official voting recognition for athletes was realized at the FIS Congress in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1996, where the Congress agreed to create separate sub-committees to represent athletes from each of the freestyle disciplines. He stepped down from the Committee in 1996.

Through his SMS (Smart Mogul Skiing) Camps which he founded in 1992 and expanded to become the largest summer skiing camp in North America, he has coached and inspired many young skiers and adults. Many skiers who undertook training at the SMS Camps (and later returned to coach) went on to compete on the FIS World Cup Freestyle ski circuit and at the Winter Olympic Games. Included among them were Olympic Gold medalists, Jennifer Heil (Canada) and Dale Begg-Smith (Australia, formerly Canada) in women’s/men’s Mogul events at the 2006 XX Olympic Winter Games, Torino, Italy.

He also acted as a Guest Coach for the Blackcomb Freestyle Club (1994-1996), Nagano Freestyle Team, Nagano, Japan (1994), Perisher Blue Freestyle Team, Australia (1999), Tatry Freestyle Club, British Columbia (2000) and Persoanl Coach to Australian World Cup and Olympic athlete, Nick Cleaver.

He has received a number of awards including The Premier’s Athletic award in 1991 and 1993 and, in 1992, the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Federation of Canada.
