Cary Mullen 1996-97. Alpine Canada Alpin.

Cary Mullen was on skis at the age of three and by the age of six was racing for the Sunshine Ski Club of Alberta where “…his dream of winning the World Cup was born”.

Nine years later he became a member of the Banff Alpine Racers, was appointed to the Alberta Ski Team at 17, and became a member of the Canadian National Alpine Ski Team at the age of 19 in 1989. He remained with the national team until December, 1988 when he recorded his final race on the Federation Internationale de Ski (FIS) World Cup Circuit at Val d’Isere, France.

After joining the national team he competed in 133 major races in his long racing career including 73 – FIS World Cup races, FIS races, World Ski Championships, Nor-Am Cup, European Cup, Chilean National Championships, Canadian National Championships, South American Cup and US Nationals. He was also selected to represent Canada on the Olympic Winter Games team in 1992, XVl Games, Albertville, France, XVll Games, Lillehammer, Norway and the XVlll Games, Nagano, Japan (injury prevented him from competing).

In both 1992/1993 and 1993/1994 he was elected Canadian Male Skier of the Year and was nominated for the Johnny F Basset “Sports & Community” Award. Following his retirement from competitive skiing, he devoted considerable time for the benefit of the younger generation with the establishment of the Cary Mullen Character Awards that recognized young athletes who displayed the 4Cs of a true champion – Courage, Commitment, Confidence and Camaraderie. He also founded Champ Fest, a charity that brought together a coalition of ‘Champions’, including sporting heroes, business leaders, volunteers and friends, to raise funds to help Kids Cancer Care purchase life-giving equipment and the Alberta Alpine Ski Team to assist in the training of the “champions of tomorrow”.
