“Sweet Caporal Skiers’ Book, 1948-1949” by Herman “Jackrabbit” Smith-Johannsen.

Published in 1948, Herman Smith Johannsen’s “Sweet Caporal Skiers’ Book” showcases maps of the Province of Quebec Ski Districts. The cover shows 3 people skiing down a gorgeous mountain with sweeping trees in the background. Contents include an introduction by Jackrabbit Johannsen, “Wax Facts”, ski developments not shown on the maps, a list of ski tows, lifts and schools, eleven smaller fold out trail maps and one large fold out trail map of the whole region.

The Sweet Caporal Skiers’ Book was first published in 1939 by Imperial Tobacco as free advertising that was quickly snapped up by skiers as the authoritative guide to the Laurentian trails. With the exception of the war years, the book was issued annually with updated maps and text until 1949. Jackrabbit and his family were involved with the project throughout.
