Hall of Famer
Jean-Luc Brassard
Jean-Luc Brassard was eight when he began skiing on a small hill near his home in Valleyfield, Que. Naturally talented, he soon sought challenges beyond traditional skiing and found them in moguls. He developed quickly, joining the Canadian national freestyle team at 17 to begin a 12-year international career. Just months later, on Feb. 2, 1991, at 18, he stunned the freestyle skiing world by winning his first World Cup competition at Mont Gabriel, Que.
In FIS World Cup competition (excluding dual moguls), Brassard entered 117 events, collecting 20 victories and another 27 silver or bronze medals.
He competed at four FIS world championships: 1991 in Lake Placid, N.Y.; 1993 in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, where he won his first world title; 1995 in La Clusaz, France, where he earned silver; and 1997 in Iizuna Kogen, Japan, where he claimed his second world crown. He also raced in 1999 at Meiringen-Hasliberg, Switzerland. At home, he won Canadian championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996.
Brassard represented Canada at four Olympic Winter Games: 1992 in Albertville, France; 1994 in Lillehammer, Norway; 1998 in Nagano, Japan; and 2002 in Salt Lake City.
His crowning achievement came at Lillehammer in 1994, when he captured Olympic gold in moguls. Pat Smith, then CEO of the Canadian Freestyle Skiing Association, said Brassard took “his sport to a whole new level. Not only was he the first Canadian male ever to win Olympic gold in snow sports, but he was, and is, a truly great ambassador for his country, his sport, his teammates and his sponsors.”
