Mark Labow

Mark Lablow was involved with the Canadian Ski Patrol for 70 years, and was a driving force in the organization’s development and success over the years, serving as national president from 1969 to 1975. 

As the founding president of the Fédération Internationale des Patrouilles de Ski (FIPS) in 1979, Mark served as president until 2003. In addition, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Canadian Ski Council.

Mark received a number of awards and recognitions over the years for his contributions to skiing and ski patrolling, including the Queen’s silver Jubilee medal (1977), membership in the Laurentian Ski Hall of Fame (2006), and honorary memberships in the ski patrol systems of the United States, Australia and France.

In 2010, he was inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame, and he was awarded the first Canadian Ski Patrol Diamond Award just. In 2011, the Mark Labow Award was created in his honour to recognize an individual or organization who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to the aims and objectives of FIPS. Most recently, Mark was unanimously appointed Honorary Founding Chairman of FIPS by the member organizations, in recognition of and gratitude for all his work in establishing FIPS.

Ski patrolling was Mark’s lifelong passion – he spent his life striving to improve safety on the hills and in the mountains that he loved. He inspired more than one generation of ski patrollers, and he will be fondly remembered by many for the invaluable knowledge in first aid and leadership that he passed on with such great spirit. He was generous with his time, advice and support, he will always be remembered as a consummate gentleman.
