Andrzej Kozbial

Andrzej Kozbial was the program director of Canada’s alpine ski team from 1974 to 1988, playing a key role in the international success of the legendary Crazy Canucks and their female counterparts.

Born in Poland, Andrzej immigrated to Canada in 1969, settling first in Mont Tremblant, Que., as a ski instructor. By 1972, he was coaching young southern Ontario skiers in Collingwood before moving to Ottawa in 1974 to direct the national alpine ski program. In this role, he managed all aspects of the team’s program, from scheduling to securing official suppliers.

Among the athletes he coached were Steve Podborski and Laurie Graham, both of whom went on to international ski success. Graham recalled Kozbial as an enthusiastic yet strict coach whose demanding dryland training helped her improve. Podborski praised him for pushing athletes to excel and ensuring the team had top equipment to remain competitive on the World Cup circuit.

Kozbial’s leadership helped elevate Canada’s alpine program to new heights, gaining respect from international competitors and European media alike. Known for being approachable and supportive, he earned the admiration of his athletes.

After leaving the national team in 1989, Andrzej and his wife Barbara opened two clothing stores in Ottawa, Renee Hauer Sweater Outlet and Escape Clothing.

Andrzej Kozbial was a dedicated program director whose leadership and commitment transformed Canada’s alpine ski team into a respected force on the world stage.
