Liisa Savijarvi rose to prominence as one of Canada’s most versatile and determined alpine ski racers of the 1980s. She first drew national attention in 1980 at age 17 with standout performances at the Ontario and Canadian junior championships and the Pontiac Cup. Named to the national training squad after that season, she became a full member of the Canadian Alpine Ski Team in 1982.

By the mid-1980s Liisa was firmly established on the international stage. She represented Canada at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and was named to the “A” team in 1987, training and racing in downhill, giant slalom and super-G — making her the only Canadian female racer of the era to train seriously in all three speed disciplines. Her 1985–86 World Cup season was her best: she ranked fifth in downhill standings and second in super-G standings, collected multiple top-five finishes and captured the Canadian Alpine Championships overall title.

Liisa’s promising career was cut short on March 17, 1987, when she suffered severe leg injuries and crushed vertebrae in a high-speed training crash at Vail, Colo. The accident ended her run as a medal contender and forced her to retire from the national team in March 1988, just months before the Calgary Olympics. Her crash was a pivotal moment in Canadian skiing, sparking discussions about safety and athlete support at international training camps.

Following her retirement, Liisa remained deeply involved in skiing. She became a Level II instructor with the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance, a Level III coach with the Canadian Ski Coaches Federation and co-owner of Ski Escape, an independent travelling ski school with operations in four provinces and more than 30 programs across Canada. She shared her experience and inspired the next generation of athletes through her coaching, clinics and advocacy for grassroots development.

Liisa was named Ski Racing’s Alpine Skier of the Year in 1986 and received the Canadian Alpine Ski Team Kodak Award of Excellence. She also earned national championship titles and Nor-Am victories across multiple disciplines, cementing her reputation as one of Canada’s most adaptable and consistent performers on the world stage.
